3 Things to Help You Feel More Secure About Your Career Future

I think it’s time we talk about the elephant in the room.

From talking to business owners and non-business owners alike who are experiencing the same circumstances in our current world, I’ve noticed a theme.

As a whole, it seems like each of us feels a little less safe or secure in whatever current career situation we’re in. So, if you’re a business owner, maybe you feel a little less CERTAIN that your business success is solid and inevitable even through an economic crisis. If you’re an employee, you might feel a little less secure in your position. What if your company needs to cut back? Is there really such a thing as being truly essential to a business?

When we see our current circumstances as our only viable option, we start to get really worried with the possibility of that option being taken away.

So, today I want to get into the nitty gritty conversation surrounding how you can create more safety and security within your chosen career, even during economic and societal uncertainty.

And, SPOILER: LinkedIn can be the vehicle that makes this possible for you.

3 Things You Need to Feel Secure in Your Future

We may not be able to see the future but we sure can hedge our bets and put ourselves in the best position to be able to thrive, no matter what comes our way.

In my opinion, the 3 things we need to have in place to do that are solid relationships, our own unique take on things, and a place for those two things to live and GROW.

Why You Need Solid Relationships

Never have I ever received an opportunity that didn’t stem from a human relationship. Most of the time, we talk about “connection” as a business strategy, but it’s true that when you cultivate relationships with people who are going where you want to go, you’ll start to see opportunities open up that you didn’t know were possible.

If you can start to build solid relationships, you’ll have an endless network to connect you with your next opportunity in the event that something you’re doing now falls through or manifests itself to not really be what you want.

I love this quote from Alex Leombruni that reminds us, “Opportunities come from business relationships, not business plans.”

Why You Need a Unique Take

When you start to show people that you actually have something to say, you begin to position yourself as an expert who adds value rather than a commodity like anyone else. Creating content that shows your unique take on things will start to create an environment where people value your brain instead of just your body in a seat. And that is when you start to build momentum where you have more opportunities than you could ever say “yes” to in your lifetime. Being in a position where you can take your pick of amazing possibilities is what we all want, isn’t it?

John Dewey said, “There’s all the difference in the world between having something to say, and having to say something.” If you want to set yourself apart, you’ll cultivate your ability to do that first one until people start to notice.

Why You Need a Platform Designed for Growth

All social media platforms aren’t created equal. And even though most of them say that they promote community and connection, none of ‘em really do it like LinkedIn. If you want to focus your efforts on actions that will truly help you grow solid relationships you can RELY on and get noticed for what you have to say, LinkedIn is the place that brings those two things (content creation and relationship cultivation) together. It’s also the very place people go to find collaborators and people to seize opportunities they have available.

So, if you’re looking for more career security, if you want to build your own insurance plan for the future, why aren’t you on LinkedIn yet?
